Your feedback

In March and April 2025, we consulted with the community about the proposed installation of a new fence around part of the baseball diamond at Surrey Park. The proposed fence would match existing fencing and enhance safety for all Surrey Park users.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey and shared their thoughts.

The majority of the feedback received was strongly supportive of the project, telling us that a fence would increase safety and functionality for all users of the park.

Next steps

As a result of this response, we will be installing the new fence as proposed around the north-west edge of the baseball diamond at Surrey Park. Construction of the new fence is scheduled to commence in May 2025 and be completed together with the current adjoining ground renewal works by July 2025 – subject to weather.

We want to reassure the community that the baseball diamond at Surrey Park will remain as a designated dog off-lead area. Also note that while the area next to the baseball diamond has not been used for formal cricket competition for some years, it will continue to be able to be used for other informal activities.

About the project

The proposed fence would be located around the outer north-west edge of the baseball diamond. Currently temporary fencing has been installed around the construction site for the oval restoration project. This is where the proposed fencing will be placed.

The concept design for the project includes:

  • A 1.8m high black mesh fence
  • Two 1.0m wide pedestrian access gates
  • One 4.0m wide vehicle access gates

The project aims to:

  • Continue to enable public access to all of Surrey Park
  • Increase the safety of other park users while the baseball diamond is being used for games/training (a perimeter fence would minimise ball escape)
  • Reduce the potential of dogs escaping onto busier nearby roads
  • Improve the standard of sporting facilities within Whitehorse to accommodate both community and elite-level sporting participation
  • Reduce workload on volunteers and support increased volunteer involvement/participation (a perimeter fence would remove a temporary fence having to be installed and taken down by volunteers for each use)
