We asked for feedback about 'on-demand' lighting at the west oval. We later extended that to include the east oval after securing funding to upgrade the sports field flood lighting on the east oval to LED lighting.
About LED lighting
LED lighting is more energy efficient. It also allows for better control of light spill, and it means we can adjust the level of brightness.
The new lighting would enable us to have on-demand lighting at the east oval, if the community supports it.
The lighting upgrade on the east oval is planned for early 2024. We will use the same existing lighting poles and cables. The only thing we will change is the type of lighting from an older system (halide lighting) to LED.
About on-demand lighting
On-demand lighting allows the community to use existing sports field flood lighting in the morning and evenings when the ovals are not in use by sporting clubs.
The lighting can be activated by a push button and will switch on for 30 minutes.
On-demand lighting will increase use of both ovals and create more opportunities for people to exercise and participate in sport and recreation.
This action is in line with Council’s Recreation Strategy which supports increasing the use of our sports fields.
The ovals will mostly be free for the community to use during the early mornings. It will not be as available in the evenings because that's when sports clubs typically use them.
