Whitehorse Open Space Strategy

You’re invited to have your say on our new Whitehorse Open Space Strategy. We would love to hear from you through the following channels:

  1. Filling out the Open Space User Survey will be a great way to inform us on your experience and aspirations for our open space network in a structured way, supporting efficient incorporation into the Strategy.
  2. Come talk to us and learn more at one of our free community pop-up events.
  3. Share ideas about what a good open space look like to you through the Share Your Ideas Tool.

Community consultation will run until 30 November 2022.

The strategy will be an innovative and forward-thinking guide to how we sustainably manage, protect and grow our open space network to support a healthy and liveable community over the next 15 years.

‘Open space’ typically includes parks, gardens and reserves. In addition, we also aim to look at how streetscapes, public spaces in retail centres, and open land owned or managed by other authorities can complement the open space network in Whitehorse.

At Whitehorse, we’re fortunate to have 175 playgrounds, over 20 bushland reserves and more than 350 parks, with ‘open space’ representing more than 10% of the municipality.

Our population has grown by more than 25,000 people since our existing strategy was developed in 2007, changing the way we use and need open spaces.

Over the past few years, the pandemic has also significantly changed the way we live and how we use open space, especially at a local level.

Key issues we need to address through the new strategy include:

  • The demand for open space as our population continues to increase.

  • How we can prepare open space to assist to mitigate the impacts of climate change and strengthen its role in supporting biodiversity.

  • Enhancing our open spaces so they can be shared and enjoyed by everyone for a diverse range of purposes.

We are starting our new Whitehorse Open Space Strategy from scratch and your feedback will influence its direction. Help us understand what you value about open space, how you use it and your ideas for our open space network, including where we need more open space and how we can improve existing spaces.
