Why is Mont Albert railway station being removed?

The Victorian Government is removing dangerous and congested level crossings across Victoria as part of its Level Crossing Removal Project.

The level crossings in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert are being removed this year by lowering the rail line into an open trench.

A single premium train station called Union Station, will combine both the existing Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations. Union Station will be built about 160m east of the existing Surrey Hills station.

Where will the new plaza be and what will it look like?

The plaza when built, will be a heritage-rich urban space for the community to enjoy. It will be located on a bridge over the rail trench at the eastern end of Mont Albert Village about 50 metres away from where the station was located.

The plaza will be around 30 metres x 20 metres in size, creating easy pedestrian access between Hamilton Street and Beresford Street. The Mont Albert station building will be refurbished in line with its heritage character and rebuilt at the plaza.

There will be seating and furniture, a welcoming lawn area, a community garden, screen walls, and historical and local imagery and wording.

Why does the plaza need a name?

The plaza needs a name so it can be identified in Mont Albert.

It’s important the plaza is connected to Mont Albert Village and encourages pedestrians to use it as an easy-to-access destination.

What are some of the projects Council has advocated for throughout the Level Crossing Removal Project?

Council has consistently advocated for quality urban and open space outcomes as part of the Level Crossing Removal project delivery. We have also advocated to minimise disruption to traders and residents, and for the Level Crossing Removal Project to share detailed designs with neighbouring residents and businesses.

Council advocated specifically for the plaza near Mont Albert Village to create a destination that will be filled with local history. The relocated station building will overlook the plaza towards Hamilton Street.

Some of our other advocacy efforts include:

    • The pick up and drop off area to improve commuter access to the new train station.

    • Numerouimprovement works throughout the project corridor including planting and landscaping within streetscapes and at the Lorne Parade Reserve open space.

    • Funding sports field flood lighting at Surrey Park for the Baseball Club.

    • The retention and upgrade of the Mont Albert station building.

    • Protecting and retaining as many as possible of the existing trees in the ‘Avenue of Honour’ in Churchill Street, Mont Albert.

What is the plan for the Mont Albert station building?

The use of the station building is yet to be determined. Council is investigating potential options and will share more information with the community later this year.

What is the timeline of works at Mont Albert railway station?

Major works to remove the level crossings at Mont Albert Road and Union Road are now complete.

The new Union Station is open for commuter use.
