Background information
From animals to building site management, local laws enable us to create a safe, vibrant and harmonious community.
To ensure our local laws continue to reflect the needs of our community, we are reviewing them.
In July 2023, we asked for your feedback to help us identify emerging issues and address concerns in Whitehorse.
After reviewing your feedback and suggestions, we have developed draft updates to our local laws. You can read our Consultation Report for a summary of our first stage of community engagement.
Proposed changes in our Draft Community Local Law 2024 include:
Expanding clauses for issues such as:
properties beingkept in a dangerous, unsightly or detrimental condition.
trees and vegetation overhanging onto footpaths, roads or streetlights.
building sites causing safety issues.
Introducing new sections for issues including:
fire hazards
obstructions of Council land and roads
gates being installed from private property into Council reserves
commercial e-scooter operations (e-scooter or e-bike sharing businesses).
We encourage you to read our online documents for a full list of proposed changes and the reasons why they have been suggested.
Local Laws expire every 10 years and must be reviewed before they are renewed, according to the Local Government Act 2020. This is to ensure they remain relevant and respond to new or emerging issues.
