We asked

We asked for feedback on a proposal for one-way traffic along two streets in Mont Albert.

The streets are Hamilton Street and part of Churchill Street, between Mont Albert Road and the intersection with Stanhope Street. Download our map to view the location.

Council contacted about 2500 residents, businesses and property owners within 800 metres of Hamilton Street, as well as shoppers, workers and visitors to ask for their feedback. The majority of the responses supported the one-way traffic option.

You told us:

  • There are safety concerns about traffic movements at the entrances and in the middle of Mont Albert Village. Locals reported vehicles making multiple point turns, minor collisions and near misses involving vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Mont Albert Village is a growing business precinct. The area needs to accomodate a variety of users including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, mobility scooter users and families with prams.
  • There is strong support to revitalise the area and to help local businesses thrive. The street needs wider footpaths to increase foot traffic, allow for safer movement and to provide outdoor space for use by traders.
  • The Village has a unique, charming historical ambiance. It has great potential to become a vibrant destination for locals and visitors.

We did

At the Council meeting on 3 March 2025, Councillors unanimously voted for Hamilton Street and part of Churchill Street in Mont Albert to permanently change to one-way traffic (northbound). This decision was made after two community consultations in 2023 and 2024.

Next steps

1. Independent advice for interim traffic arrangement

Construction of the new streetscape will begin in the 2026/2027 financial year. Council is investigating a temporary one-way traffic arrangement in the meantime.

An independent traffic consultant has been engaged to investigate this option and to consider whether a temporary one-way traffic arrangment could be installed until the streetscape works begin.

Consideration will be given to the additional costs the temporary arrangement would require.

2. Drainage works

Stormwater concerns are being experienced in Mont Albert Village, particularly at the Mont Albert Road end. It is impacting a number of traders during significant rainfall events.

Interim solutions are being considered and repairs need to be made in preparation for the streetscape works.

Council engineers are planning these works so that they cause minimal disruption to the traders and traffic.

When the timeframes for these drainage works have been confirmed, Council will advise the locals who will be affected by the drainage works.

3. Community consultation for streetscape plan

In mid-2025, we will be asking the local community for their input into the streetscape design of Hamilton Street and part of Churchill Street.

The streetscape design will enhance the public areas. It may include improvements to the footpaths, pedestrian crossings, traffic flow, car parking, street lighting, seating, activity spaces, bike racks, garden beds and street trees.

As the streetscape plans are developed, we encourage you to stay up-to-date and be aware of the opportunities to provide input. Click on the Follow button above to subscribe for updates.

Background information

Hamilton Street was temporarily made one-way during the State Government’s level crossing removal works. Some traders and residents preferred this change.

In late 2023, we consulted with Hamilton Street traders about making the one-way traffic permanent, but we did not receive enough support to proceed.

A petition tabled at Council on 12 February 2024 requested a review of this proposal, asking for input from the broader Mont Albert community. Therefore we held another round of consultation which invited feedback from the broader community, as well as traders, shoppers and visitors, on this one-way traffic proposal.
